Privacy Policy
Effective October 9, 2026
Backyard Comp (backyardcomp.com and the app at backyardcomp.com/app) is run by OpsAcceleration LLC, a California company ("we", "us"). This policy explains what information we collect when you use Backyard Comp, what we do with it, who can see it, and the choices you have. We have tried to keep it short and plain.
The short version
- Only organizers create accounts. Players and spectators join with a code and never give us an email address.
- We use your information to run your comps and send the emails you ask for. That's it.
- We don't sell your information, show ads, or track you across other websites.
- Anyone with your comp's link and a code can see what is in it, and photos can be opened by anyone who has the photo's link. Only post what you're happy for your group to see.
- You can delete your account and everything in it yourself, or email us.
What we collect
If you create an organizer account
- Your name and email address.
- Your password, stored only in a scrambled, one-way form (a "hash"). We cannot read it.
- That you confirmed you are 18 or older, and when you agreed to these terms.
- When you signed up, when you last signed in, and whether you have confirmed your email.
What goes into a comp
Whatever the organizer and players put in: the comp's name, dates and place; team names; players' first names or nicknames; events, rules, scores and results; posts, reactions, votes and callouts; choices made in the "Settle it" games; and photos and videos people upload. We also record when the comp was last changed.
On your device
The app stores your sign-in and the comp code you're using in your browser's local storage, so you don't have to type a code every time. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies.
Automatically
- Our hosting providers keep standard technical logs (such as IP address, browser type and the time of a request) to keep the service running and secure.
- We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits to our pages. It does not use cookies, does not identify you, and does not follow you to other websites.
How we use it
- To run Backyard Comp: show scores, schedules, feeds and highlight reels to the people in your comp.
- To send emails you ask for: the code to confirm your email address and the code to reset your password. We don't send marketing emails. If we ever do, you'll be able to unsubscribe.
- To keep the service secure, prevent abuse, and fix problems. This includes reviewing a comp if someone reports a post or photo in it.
- To understand, in total numbers, how the site is used (for example, how many comps were created this week).
- To comply with the law.
Who can see it
- People in your comp. Anyone with your comp's link and a team or spectator code can see its teams, player names, scores, posts and photos. Team codes are shown only to the organizer.
- Photos and videos are "unlisted", not private. Each file has a long, random web address that can't be guessed, but anyone who has that address can open it.
- Us. We can see accounts and comps in order to run and support the service.
- Service providers who run parts of Backyard Comp for us, under their own privacy and security terms: Microsoft Azure (website hosting, database, photo storage and sending email) and Cloudflare (domain name service and web analytics). Data is stored in the United States.
- If the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety, or as part of a sale or merger of the business (in which case this policy would continue to apply).
We do not sell or rent your personal information, or share it for anyone else's marketing.
Children
Backyard Comp is used at family gatherings, so children may take part in a comp. But:
- Only adults (18+) can create an organizer account. We don't knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13. Players, including kids, never give us an email address.
- The organizer decides who joins and is responsible for getting a parent's or guardian's permission before a child's name or photo is added.
- We suggest using first names or nicknames for kids, and only posting photos their parents are happy to share.
- If you're a parent and want something about your child removed, email us at backyardcomp@gmail.com and we'll delete it promptly.
How long we keep it
- Accounts and comps are kept until you delete them, or until you ask us to.
- An account whose email is never confirmed may be removed after 48 hours.
- When a comp or account is deleted, it's removed from the app and the database straight away. Uploaded photo and video files can stay in storage after that. If you want those removed too, email us and we'll delete them.
- Hosting logs are kept by our providers for their standard periods.
Your choices and rights
- See or correct your information: organizers can change comp details in the app. For anything else, email us.
- Delete: organizers can delete a comp, or their whole account and every comp in it, from the app (Run your own comp → Delete my account). A player can ask their organizer to remove their name or posts, or email us.
- Get a copy of the information we hold about you: email us.
We'll respond within 30 days, and we may need to confirm it's really you first. We won't treat you differently for making a request. California residents can ask about these rights at any time.
Do Not Track. We don't track you across other websites, so browser "Do Not Track" signals don't change how Backyard Comp behaves.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS. Passwords and emailed codes are stored only as one-way hashes. Sign-ins are signed so they can't be forged. Access to our systems is limited. No system is perfectly secure, though, so please use a password you don't use anywhere else.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change materially affects how we use your information, we'll tell organizers by email or in the app before it takes effect.
